It’s no secret that physicians, nurses and other users of electronic health record (EHR) systems aren’t always enamored with the technology. What does seem to be a secret to some is how to change that paradigm: how to ensure that EHRs live up to their promise and potential.
Digging deep into that important issue, Net Health’s CEO Josh Pickus today launches a commentary site on one of the world’s largest content platforms Authority, a Medium publication, used by everyone from business leaders to celebrities to share personal stories and insights, in an article entitled, Confessions of an EHR CEO.
In his inaugural commentary, Pickus acknowledges dissatisfaction of users, many of whom complain that these systems add unnecessary time to busy workdays, silo rather than streamline work processes, and do little for patients.
Then he explores the reality of the technology, primarily that they will remain a foundational component of healthcare. Therefore, the mission of companies like Net Health, and CEOs like himself, is to find ways to reduce frustrations and ensure EHRs provide optimal value to patients and providers. He notes, “I believe that one major step we can take is getting more useful information OUT of EHRs to balance the time users spend putting information INTO them.”
And that, says Josh, is where we can begin to tap in to the tremendous amount of “meaningful data collected by EHRs that isn’t getting utilized.” He believes that by harnessing data, we can transform systems that have become a burden for users into valuable decision support systems.
