How often is “patient engagement” a source of stress in your therapy rehab clinic?
Pretty often, huh?
It’s a tricky, complicated endeavor but an important one to get a handle on. Patients and clinicians share the common goal of wanting a positive outcome, but busy lives and other factors often get in the way of the best intentions, such as:
- Lack of motivation due to slow or unnoticed progress
- The increasing costs of healthcare
- Work, home life, extra-curricular activities, etc.
Getting through those barriers is a struggle, so the “trick” is to get the patient to WANT to attend their therapy. Recovery isn’t always enough incentive for patients to show up, there needs to be more.
But take heart, studies show that by engaging the patient in their care, they will be better informed and will have a better experience overall, thus leading to a more positive outcome. As clinicians look to benchmark and improve both performance and quality of care in 2020, patient engagement strategies will be a key area to evaluate.
