The Strategic View of Modified Stage 2 Meaningful Use: Part 3

As in previous columns, we are continuing to review the objectives and measures for Modified Stage 2 Meaningful Use set forth from 2015 through 2017 (Table). It is imperative that you read each objective, specific measure(s), exclusions, and/or specifications and carefully examine the details as some of the Alternate Exclusions pertain to the previous calendar year 2015.

As the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services states,1 beginning this calendar year 2016, the electronic health record (EHR) reporting period must be completed within January 1 and December 31 of the calendar year. Eligible professionals, eligible hospitals, and critical access hospitals that are new participants in the program would have an EHR reporting period of any continuous 90-day period between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2016. For all returning participants, however, the EHR reporting period would be a full calendar year from January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2016. Best of luck as you focus on diligent documenting and strategic workflows!
